A Command Line Lexicon for Windows 2000

One of the keys to managing a Windows 2000 network is knowledge of diagnostic and utility programs. They can simplify day-to-day maintenance chores and can also help automate nearly every administrative and management task. Here's an alphabetical list of important programs, what to use them for, and their location:

arp Displays and modifies the IP-to-Physical address translation tables used by address resolution protocol (ARP). TCP/IP Utility
cacls Displays or modifies access control lists of files and folders Native to Win2k and XP
chkntfs Allows you to specify whether a disk is checked during boot Native to Win2k and XP
cipher Displays or alters the encryption status of files and folders. Native to Win2k and XP
compact Displays or alters the compression status of files and folders. Native to Win2k and XP
convert Converts FAT volumes to NTFS Native to Win2k and XP
CSVDE Comma Separated Value Data Exchange. Imports and exports data in CSV format to/from Active Directory. Native to Win2k Server
DCDiag Domain Controller Diagnostics Native to Win2k Server
diskpart Does everything the "disk management" snap-in can do, and more. Native to Win2k and XP
diskperf -y Registers logical disk counters with OS Native to Win2k and XP
DNScmd A command line interface for managing DNS server Native to Win2k Server

dsclient Software required to enable non-Win2k clients minimal Active Directory interaction Clients\Win9X on cd

GPO Tool Checks Group Policy object integrity and monitors policy replication Win2k Resource Kit Tool (and a free download from Microsoft)
GPRefresh Refresh Group Policy including security settings Native to XP. XP does not include a \refreshpolicy switch on the secedit command

hostname Displays hostname TCP/IP Utility
ipconfig Displays TCP/IP status for all NICs. Includes several very important switches for registering client with DNS and DHCP. TCP/IP Utility
ipsecmon Displays the active security associations on local or remote computers Native to Win2k and XP
ipsecpol Script IPSec policies Win2k Resource Kit Tool
ipxroute Displays and modifies IPX routing tables and settings Native to Win2k running NWLink
jetpack Compacts and optimizes WINS and DHCP databases Native to Win2k Server
LDIFDE LDAP Interchange Format Data Exchange. Import and exports data in LDAP format to/from Active Directory Native to Win2k Server
makeboot Creates boot disks to facilitate CD based install onto PCs without a bootable cd-rom drive Native to Win2k
MoveTree Move Active Directory objects from one domain to another Win2k Resource Kit Tool
msconfig Modify environment and startup variables Native to 9x, NT, and XP, but ports to Win2k
nbtstat Displays protocol statistics and current TCP/IP connections using NetBIOS over TCP/IP TCP/IP Utility
net Suite of command line utilities that provide a great deal of administrative and report generation functionality. Native to Win2k and XP
netdiag Evaluates NetBIOS, DNS, and service registrations Support\tools on cd
netdom View and manipulate domain features such as machine accounts and trusts. Win2k Resource Kit Tool
netsh Suite of command line utilities that allow local or remote configuration of numerous network components such as IP address settings, DHCP, WINS, DNS, and RRAS Native to Win2k and XP

ntdsutil Repair, check, compact, move, dump, and list detailed information from the Active Directory database Native to Win2k Server - **important: used for authoritative restores of Active Directory database
pathping Hybrid of Ping and Tracert TCP/IP Utility
perms Displays a user's access permissions for a file or directory Win2k Resource Kit Tool (and a free download from Microsoft)
ping Primary tool used for identifying network connectivity, espcially of remote machines TCP/IP Utility
RBFG Creates boot disks to facilitate RIS based install onto PCs without a PXE NIC Native to RIS Server
rcp Copies files to and from computers using remote copy protocol Native to Win2k and XP
regedt32 Advanced registry editor Native to Win2k and XP
regsrvr32 Registers dynamic link libraries Native to Win2k and XP
repadmin Checks Active Directory replication consistency and status. Also used to force KCC recalculation Support\tools on cd
replmon Displays and monitors Active Directory replication topology and status Support\tools on cd
RIPrep Utility to prepare and upload a reference computer's operating system to a RIS server Native to RIS server
robocopy "Robust" file copy, including content mirroring features Win2k Resource Kit Tool
route Manipulates network routing tables TCP/IP Utility
rpings Confirms RPC connectivity between servers and clients Win2k Resource Kit Tool (and a free download from Microsoft)
runas Launch program or msc with alternate credential Native to Win2k and XP
secedit Analyze or configure security policy. Also used to refresh policy in Win2k Native to Win2k and XP
setupmgr Creates answer files, UDFs, and batch files that can be used for unattended installs, sysprep, or RIS Support\tools on CD
sigverif Scans for and reports on unsigned device drivers Native to Win2k and XP
SNMPutil Displays SNMP configuration Win2k Resource Kit Tool
syskey Enables strong password encryption in Active Directory Native to Win2k Server
telnet Allows connectivity to a remote system TCP/IP Utility
tracert Displays router hops that packets take to specific destination TCP/IP Utility
tree Graphically displays folder hierarchy Native to Win2k and XP
User State Migration Tools (USMT) Migrates a user's profile data and work files between PCs. Especially handy in new OS transition. Win2k Resource Kit Tool (and a free download from Microsoft)
whoami Queries and displays currently logged on user Win2k Resource Kit Tool
windiff Compares files and folder hierarchy Support\tools on cd
winrep Diagnostic reporting program Native to 9x, NT, Win2k, and XP
